Choosing the right jeans

Jeans guide

Unfortunately, sustainable jeans are not yet an everyday item in every boutique. They are not as easy to find and try on as the range of jeans available in chain or brand stores.

But when you're shopping for new jeans, there are a few easy tips that can help you to shop for jeans also online.

Here's how to do it:

Decide on the model you want

The right fit

Jeans guide

Jean size guides often talk about the fit of the trousers. First of all, think about how you would like your jeans to fit.

The "fit" of jeans refers to the looseness of the thighs. Skinny= skin tight, regular= normal, or loose= relaxed.

In recent years, jeans fashion has favored a loose fit, but there are always other trends and styles on the go.

So choose according to your interests and body type. A good guideline when buying long-term wear is to ask yourself, which style would you wear the most?

Waist

Jeans guide

The waist measurement and model of jeans are often referred to as waist/rise in the size chart. The waist of jeans can be low, medium, or high.

A low waist is well below the navel, even below the hips. Low-rise jeans expose the belly and have a short zipper. The medium waist rises slightly above the waist and the high waist model goes all the way to the navel.

Leg

Jeans guide

The leg style of the jeans largely determines the overall jeans design.

Straight leg is a straight leg that does not taper or widen in length. The straight leg jeans are classic and ideal for timeless dressing and capsule wardrobes.

Tapered leg jeans are similar to straight leg jeans, but the leg tapers downwards, giving them a slightly carroty look.

Slim and skinny legs are narrow and even skin-tight jeans.

Flare leg and bootcut styles flare out at the bottom. The bootcut leg descends from the ankle to the shoe, while the flare leg flares out a little higher, resembling trumpet pants.

In the 2020s, the super-trend has been the wide leg, which is a very loose cut from top to bottom. Wide jeans were first worn a lot in short lengths, and right now the latest style is the extra long wide.

Check the material

100% cotton

Jeans guide

If you're looking for a classic pair of jeans, the most traditional jeans material is 100% cotton.

Denim is remarkably durable, and quality all-cotton will only soften and improve with age. A little wear and tear and visible years of use are a natural part of a jean's charm.

However, 100% cotton does not stretch, so full-cotton jeans may not be the most ideal for things like housework, gardening or cycling.

Cotton jeans were originally created as workwear, and the world's first jeans were made of a very strong and thick fabric.

The thickness and weight of jeans is expressed in ounces (oz). If the jeans are made of denim weighing more than 16 ounces, they are more traditional heavyweight jeans. They may not be the most comfortable to wear, but they can withstand even the rigours of mining.

The 12-16 ounce range means medium-weight jeans, and under 12 ounces means lightweight jeans that are great for urban wear.

Blended material

If you move and sit a lot in your everyday life, you should choose jeans with stretch. Especially in super skinny styles and with thinner denim, elastane is a must.

With thicker denim, elastane is not necessary if the trousers have enough looseness in the thigh and leg.

Do not use fabric softener when washing stretch jeans, as this will weaken the elasticity of the elastane and permanent knee pouches may form on the jeans. However, laundry vinegar is ok!

Look carefully at the size chart and contact customer service if necessary

Jeans sizes are often given in inches. The first figure in inches is the waist measurement and the second figure is the inside leg measurement, i.e. the length.

An example of an inch size for jeans is, for example, W28"/L32", i.e. 28 inches waist and 32 inches length.

The standard inch size is 2.54 centimeters, but the inch sizes given for jeans do not translate directly into centimeters. You should measure and check your own size on the size chart of each product.

When shopping online, it's a good idea to ask customer service for help if you're struggling to choose a jeans size. Returns in the online shop are a waste of resources. A responsible shopper has the courage to ask for help when needed to make the right purchase decision.

At IVALO.COM, customer service is happy to assist you at info@ivalo.com or by telephone at +358 50 585 5500.

Care guide for jeans

Jeans guide

Whatever the material is, jeans should not be washed very often. Jeans will last longer if you can keep the washing intervals long. We recommend airing and freezing your jeans as a priority.

Preferably wash jeans inside out with dark-colored clothing, in cool water at 30°C - 40°C on a delicate wash program with low spin cycles. Empty pockets and fasten zips and buttons before washing.

The best detergent for jeans is a detergent for colored or dark-colored clothes.

It is important to remember to turn the jeans inside out after washing, straighten them when damp, and dry them hanging on the trouser hanger. Do not put the jeans in a tumble dryer.
