The new collection of the brand, KUROI MIZU - BLACK WATER, certainly delivers all what the brand manifests. The beautiful unisex pieces of the collection are offering you showstopping, edgy pieces with strong shapes and edges that inspire you to explore the multi-functional aspects of the garments. The materials used in the collection are eco-friendly as 60% of collection's pieces are ZERO WASTE and all of the jersey products are created from recycled jersey.

The designer of the brand, Lauri Järvinen, got his inspiration for the collection from water and its movements. The collection also takes note from the modern lifestyle, as people are living in smaller and smaller places. LAURIJARVINENSTUDIO wanted to give a solution for the compact wardrobes of the people - you can buy one garment and style it several different ways.

Lauri Jävinen, the designer of LAURIJÄRVINENSTUDIO, did you always know that you would become a designer?

No I didn’t always want to become a designer. I wanted to become a tattoo artist, but it didn’t workout because I had accident, so I needed to figure something else out. I had always liked clothing and dressing up so I think that becoming a designer was just an easy solution. I wasn’t good in High School, but I applied to a clothing artisan school, - got in and so the journey started.

What inspires you to create the beautiful LAURIJARVINENSTUDIO pieces?

What inspires me to make LAURIJARVINENSTUDIO garments - I think it’s idea of not making clothes. I make mostly avant-garde design and I want it to show. I think shapes, silhouettes and structures are more interesting than just garments and basic clothes.

And I need to add that my all time favourite inspirations come from music, 60- and 70’s London and Punk movement, and Japanese format.

Some of your collection's materials are zero waste and you also use recycled jersey in your designs. How do you source these materials?

All of my recycled jersey comes from ZeroWaste. I have noticed that it is good quality and its made ethically and ecologically.

Of course movements like Fashion Revolution (Vaatevallankumous) have helped me as a designer to get more information about different textile factories. I think that the fast fashion business is way too consuming for this planet and it will destroy it slowly... and if I can do something against it I want to do it. I only want to use recycled and ethical materials. The most important thing at LAURIJARVINENSTUDIO is to make as eco-friendly clothes as we can.

I think every designer has to think about these things.

I also use zero waste technique for some off our collection's clothes. It's awesome that we can create some patterns for clothing that ensure that there's no fabric residue - they're zero waste. It's a small step but in the bigger picture it will be effective.

What is your view on the modern fashion world?

In some ways we are going on the right direction with businesses being more transparent and more honest. Customers are have more knowledge about what they are buying and what they are using. I have hope for fashion world to become more and more less consuming. But of course there is a lot to do.

What is your favourite piece from your own brand?

I think currently my favourite pieces are Miki-ring from the accessorises and Toni-pants. They are both simple, stylish and can be worn from day to night.

Thank you so much Lauri!
